A video of a baby elephant that died after being hit by a lorry in Gerik has moved many netizens to tears.
Gerik – A mother elephant’s unwavering love tugged at the hearts of Malaysians, as a viral video captured her standing loyally beside a lorry believed to have fatally struck her calf along the East-West Highway (JRTB) in Gerik-Jeli earlier today.
The 1-minute and 11-second clip, widely shared across social media, shows the young elephant wedged beneath a chicken transport lorry. The tragic incident reportedly occurred around 2 a.m., though no human injuries were reported.
The mother’s refusal to leave the scene portrayed a powerful image of maternal love – a universal instinct that knows no species.
"Please drive carefully in these areas. These creatures, too, deserve our protection," urged Facebook user Awie Azim.
Nor Hayati Abu Hassan emotionally reflected:
"Such is the heart of a mother. Even if she’s an animal, a mother’s love is no different. Be patient, Jah – may you reunite with your baby in paradise."
Adraa Suma described the mother elephant’s quiet vigil as heartbreaking yet profound.
The Wildlife Department (PERHILITAN) confirmed that a team has been deployed to monitor the scene and safely relocate the grieving elephant. The calf's carcass will be buried in accordance with wildlife disposal protocols.
Gerik District Police Chief, Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood, stated that an official media release will be issued soon regarding the incident.
